Kenya Karinga

Super sweet blackberry and bing cherry flavors pop against the sparkling acidity and caramel mouthfeel.

Karinga is the name of the wet mill where the Gitwe Cooperative members gather and process coffee cherries throughout the harvest. The wet mill and producers are located between 1,650 and 1,800 meters above sea level on the eastern slopes of the Aberdare Mountain range, where the mill practices the labor intensive Kenyan style washing technique: the coffee cherry is milled using a 4 disc depulper, then double fermented, washed, soaked, and finally dried in two stages.
This coffee was a standout among the dozens of other Kenyan lots we had the opportunity to cup. In a year when Kenyan harvests have dropped by as much as 50% due to erratic climate conditions—creating a shortage of quality coffee and high costs—the quality of this coffee is truly humbling.
