Johany Quilindo Micro Lot 2
Flavors of chocolate, caramel, and jasmine
This is our second ever micro-lot from Johany Quilindo. In the early summer of 2019, we were on our regular visit to the community of San Sebastian De La Plata in Huila Colombia. We visited the warehouse where we've cupped samples from hundreds of local producers for more than a decade now. During that time we have identified about 3 dozen producers from the community that tends to produce better quality lots week after week. We know the outstanding producers in the community well, which is why it came as a big surprise to come across Johany Quilindo and his coffee for the first time ever this year, despite knowing all of his neighbors. When cupping blind we knew this coffee was from our network of farmers in the area of Inza, based on the floral qualities we have tasted from there, so the next day we set out to Johany's farm there. We found that Johany has about 1 hectare of land with coffee growing at 1700-1900 meters above sea level. He picks, pulps, ferments, washes, and dries all of his own coffee. Our second micro-lot from Johany Quilindo is a blend of Typica and Bourbon cherries. We have percieved a more delicate floral note with this micro-lot overall.
This lot comprises only 231 LBS of Green Coffee. It's our second purchase from Johany Quilindo and happens to be a Typica, Caturra, Bourbon mix varietal lot. We cupped and scored this lot an 88 at the time of purchase We offered Johany $5.00 per LB USD FOB for his coffee. We hired Caravela to Export and Import this lot into the United States. $5.00 for coffee is roughly 5 times the C price of coffee when we purchased this lot and about 3 times higher than the Fair Trade price.
