  • Guatemala El Socorro Maracaturra

Roast: Medium-Light Review Date: September 2013
Origin: Palencia, central Guatemala. Price: $19.95/12 ounces

Blind Assessment: Softly crisp, juicy. Complex fruit – particularly blackberry and Concord grape – roasted cacao nib, vanilla, anise in aroma and cup. Sweetly tart acidity; lightly syrupy, lively mouthfeel. Balanced, quietly flavor-saturated finish.

Notes: Maracaturra is a relatively recently developed cross between the huge-beaned Maragogipe and the compact-growing Caturra varieties of Arabica. The El Socorro Maracaturra grown by Juan Diego de la Cerda has consistently scored in the top five in recent Guatemala Cup of Excellence green coffee competitions. Olympia Coffee Roasting is a small-batch wholesale and retail roasting company with a youthful, no-nonsense style and a commitment to high quality organic coffees. Olympia was awarded Roast Magazine’s 2013 Micro-Roaster of the Year award. Visit www.olympiacoffeeroasting.com or call 360-753-0066 for more information.

Who Should Drink It: Fine structure and a particularly wide range of aroma/flavor notes both express and exhilaratingly transcend the classic Guatemala cup.
