Did you hear? Olympia Coffee won the first ever Coffee in Good Spirits Competition held in the United States!

Sam Schroeder, Olympia Coffee co-owner and 1st place winner of the first ever Coffee In Good Spirits competition.Coffee in Good Spirits is a competition where beautiful coffees are paired with creative alcohol based cocktails and presented to a panel of expert judges. Last December, Sam Schroeder secured First Place in the regional Denver competition, as well as the top spot for Olympia Coffee in the upcoming U.S. Competition Kansas City this March.

Sam is co-owner of Olympia Coffee, head of our Training Department, and has previously won First Place in the Northwest Barista Competition, and Third Place in the United States Barista Competition.

We partnered with Espresso Parts to show you his award winning coffee inspired cocktail recipes leading up to the big showdown in Kansas City.
Follow along and try making the two drink recipes at home.

Hot Cocktail

Mix
  • 200 ML of French Press Coffee
  • 1oz Plantation Pineapple Rum
  • 1oz Zubrowka Bison Grass Vodka
  • 1/2 Pineapple Liqueur (Giffard preferred)
  • Pour into glass rimmed with burnt sugar (optional)
  • Topped with soft maraschino whip
  • Garnish with maraschino cherry juice
Maraschino Whip:

1:6 ratio of Luxardo Maraschino and heavy whip, soft whipped in a shaker

Coffee Selection/Process:

I used Guatemala El Socorro Maracaturra, but would work well with any coffees with tropical fruit character, for a coffee in season now I would recommend Amparo Pajoy Micro Lot.  Brew at a 1:15 ratio, with a coarse grind, steep for four minutes and decant.

Cold Cocktail

  • 2 shots chilled Espresso
  • 2oz Rye
  • 1oz Pimm's Cup No. 1
  • 1/2oz Simple
  • Stir well with ice, strain over large ice cube in a rocks glass
  • garnish with orange peel and maraschino
Coffee Selection/Process:
I used Guatemala El Socorro Java, but would work well with most most washed Ethiopian coffees, currently I would recommend our Ethiopia Gola.  Extract espresso at a 1:2 ratio and chill while assembling drink.

Stayed tuned by watching our Instagram for updates the weekend of March 14th-17th to see if Sam earns a chance to represent the United States at the World Coffee in Good Spirits Competition this April.
